Jack McDonald scrapbooks of sports writing, 1926-1993.

Contains clippings of Jack McDonald's newspaper sports column, Both barrels, and many other pieces from the San Francisco call-bulletin, San Francisco examiner, The daily review, The sporting news, and other publications. The bulk of the writing covers San Francisco Bay Area baseball, horse racing, and football. Includes clippings of McDonald's travel writing, other non-sports pieces, and articles about McDonald and his work by fellow sportswriters. Contains correspondence related to McDonald's two books, Something to cheer about, and Navy retread (Vol. 31). One scrapbook (Vol. 18) contains mainly telegrams, letters, photographs, and other material regarding McDonald's voluntary enlistment during World War II.

Jack McDonald started covering sports for the San Francisco call-bulletin in 1926. He became the Call-bulletin's sports editor from 1947-1959, after serving in the navy in World War II. In 1969 he moved to Mexico and began freelance travel writing. In 1978 he moved to San Diego and resumed sports writing. McDonald authored two books: Something to cheer about, and Navy retread.
